Senior Wellness Care

At Chestnut Animal Hospital, we strive to make your pet's senior years as happy and healthy as possible. Our belief is that the best way to do this is to establish a senior care program, tailored to you pet's needs. This allows us to diagnose and treat age-related health issues early on.  In cats at the age of 8 years old, we recommend diagnostic testing to get a baseline of your cat's organ function, the health of his or her red and white blood cells and thyroid function. In our canine patients senior care starts between the ages of 6 to 8 years old, determined by such things as breed and size. Moving forward with the combination of yearly or more frequent, depending on your pet's needs, comprehensive physical exams and complete blood panels along with urinalyses allow us to get a true picture of your cat or dogs overall health. The aim of our senior care program is to maintain the quality of you pet's life and to slow the progression of any age-related diseases that may arise. Because most of the chronic diseases we see in senior pets are slow to progress, early recognition is usually only possible through diagnostic tests. The earlier that we diagnose a disease, the more the likelihood that we can slow or reverse its process and maintain a longer period of high quality life for your senior pet.
